Frontal Sinus Headache
From Expert System: Headache

We define "frontal sinus" headaches as those benign headaches occurring over the brow and forehead frequently associated with allergies, colds or respiratory infections, causing congestion from temporary blockage of the frontal sinus. Most people refer to these simply as "sinus" headaches. This program does not address actual sinus infection or sinusitis.

With true sinusitis there is progressive pain and tenderness, often with swelling over the affected sinus (face, cheek, or brow) associated with significant fever, thick mucous and general symptoms. When these complaints are present, local infection is likely, and calls for immediate medical attention and usually antibiotic treatment. (Headache in these cases is usually not the predominant complaint.)

There is continuing controversy over these distinctions, since many still equate "sinus headache" with tension headache. To make matters more confusing, change in barometric pressure may trigger frontal sinus headaches by its effect on the sinus membranes.
