Disease Description

Osteomyelitis
From Expert System: Low Back Pain

Acute or chronic low back pain rarely can be caused by infection in the spine (osteomyelitis), paraspinal, or retroperitoneal region (abscess, pyelonephritis). Infection is a relatively rare cause of back pain in adults, and if present is usually accompanied by other symptoms such as fever. Spinal (or paraspinal) infection usually results from bacterial spread from abscesses or any existing infections of adjacent structures, the abdomen, pelvis, skin, lungs, kidneys, joints, sinuses, heart valves (endocarditis), etc. Other generalized infections may cause osteomyelitis, including but not limited to tuberculosis, Lyme disease, infections associated with AIDS, etc. Osteomyelitis is more common in children.
